Consumer Internet Services in Malaya

DIALUP / ISDN
BACKGROUNDER
The first ISP in Malaysia is JARING (acronym for Joint Advanced Research Integrated NetworkinG),
the Internet arm of MIMOS, a government technological research agency.
It provides 56kbps dialup and leased line services. This was quickly
followed by Telekom Malaysia's TMNet. Until the year
2000 these two companies were the only choices of ISP that the
Malaysian consumer had. There were (and still are) two separate charges
when using dialup - a call charge by the fixed line phone services
provider (basically Telekom Malaysia) and the ISP charge by either
TMnet
or JARING. In 2000, Maxis Communications started offering free dialup
services to
the general public. The only catch was that it was not really 'free' as
the service could only be accessed via local numbers and at the rate
Telekom Malaysia was charging for local calls, it was even more
expensive than TMNet and JARING. TIME Telecom, DiGi, and Celcom later
followed suit in offering this 'free' service. These telcos have since
stopped the services - Maxis was the first to go; the last was TIME.
AVAILABILITY

SPEEDS
The typical speeds achievable through dialup range between 44kbps to
53kbps. Where repeaters are used by Telekom Malaysia, speeds are
generally limited to 28.8kbps.
